Typical cost in Cedar Park

  • One brick wall, 100–250 sq ft$600 – $2,500+
  • One-story brick house$3,500 – $10,000+
  • Two-story brick house$5,500 – $16,000+

Cedar Park Limewash Painting limewashes brick in Cedar Park, from a single indoor wall to a brick fireplace or a whole house front, for owners who want a new color without a paint film. Bare brick and its mortar both absorb the lime, so red, orange or patchy brick can move toward white, greige or an earth tone while its texture stays.

How much of the original brick shows is up to you, from a thin veil to an almost solid color. Brick work is available in Cedar Park and in Brushy Creek, Round Rock, Jonestown, Volente, Hudson Bend, Lago Vista and Liberty Hill. For outside brick, check with Cedar Park Planning and your HOA first, as explained below.

Brick limewash options

Exterior brick walls and houses

A whole brick front or house is the biggest brick job. Windows, doors and the roof edge are masked, the brick is dampened, and each wall is coated as shade reaches it. Two-story walls need scaffolding or lifts, which adds time and cost.

Red, orange and mismatched brick

Limewash quiets strong red brick or a mismatched patch without hiding the brick. A tinted first coat can counter a lot of warmth before the lighter top coat, and a test patch somewhere out of sight shows how much of the old color will still come through.

Previously painted brick

Painted brick no longer absorbs, so it comes down to the product. Sound paint can sometimes be bridged with the maker’s bonding or mineral primer, flaking paint comes off, and some limewash ranges will not go over paint at all.

Chimneys, planters and garden walls

Chimneys, planters, low garden walls and the risers of brick steps can be limewashed to match the house or a shade lighter. Surfaces that are walked on or hold water, like treads and sills, are better left bare, and cracks or failing joints are repaired first.

Interior brick walls

Indoor brick in kitchens, breakfast nooks and living rooms can be brightened with limewash and still look like brick. There is no weather to plan around inside; the checks are for dust, grease and any clear sealer, which a water test finds.

Washed-back looks

Some brands let a fresh coat be sprayed or wiped back while it is still wet to show more brick, for an older, weathered look. Whether that works, and for how long, depends on the product, so it is tried on a sample of your brick first.

Cedar Park rules for exterior brick

Cedar Park’s zoning design standards list painted brick among exterior materials that are not allowed on homes built on lots platted after those standards took effect. The code does not say whether limewash counts as paint, or how the rule applies to houses on older lots.

So before limewashing any outside brick, ask the city’s Planning department how it applies to your house, and check with your HOA if you have one. Indoor brick walls and brick fireplaces are not part of that rule. We do not start exterior brick work on the assumption that it is allowed.

What brick needs before limewash

Limewash depends on the brick drinking it in, so the wall has to be clean, sound and absorbent. Dirt and loose material are washed off. White salt crust gets noted, since it means water is moving through the brick, and a spray of water shows whether an old repellent or sealer will block the lime. Glazed or very smooth brick may not take it at all.

Leaks, open joints and sprinklers that soak the wall are dealt with first; a breathable finish helps a wall dry but does not stop new water. For the few Cedar Park homes built before 1978, removing old paint is lead-safe work under the EPA renovation rule and has to be done by a certified firm.

Brick, heat and timing

Sun-heated brick dries lime too fast for it to soak in and harden properly. Most limewash makers set an upper limit between about 80°F and 90°F and rule out direct sun on the wall. Outside brick is therefore coated in the cooler months, early in the day and wall by wall as each falls into shade, with the brick dampened before every coat.

Instead of peeling, limewash thins slowly on the walls that get the most sun and rain. Those walls can be recoated on their own without stripping.

Brick next to stone or stucco

When a house front mixes brick with limestone or stucco, those surfaces are covered on the limewash stone and limewash stucco and concrete pages. It is worth reading both before choosing one finish for the whole front.
